"The Timing of the English Renaissance"
This paper will take a very broad look at the development of literary culture in sixteenth-century England and ask why the moment of the ‘Renaissance’ came so late. The first half of the paper will focus on the Reformation and on the way in which Bible translation impacts on attitudes to the imagination. The second part of the paper will consider the search for style from the mid-century onwards and will look at several different English Virgils before reaching Spenser. Prof Rhodes will end by thinking about how we might understand the term ‘reformed versifying’.
We hope to see you there!
